Foretold and Fulfilled: The Truth of the Gospel

The scripture from Day 40 (Isaiah 53:5-6) was written around 700 years before Jesus was born and before crucifixion was invented. (But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.)  Isn’t that amazing? In fact, Psalm 22, which many believe to be a direct prophesy about Jesus and his crucifixion, was written 1000 years before the event happened.  Psalm 22:16-18 states: Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet.  All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.  In the New Testament, Matthew records what happens when the Roman soldiers divide Jesus’ clothes:  When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots (Matthew 27:35).

The Bible really is a supernatural book that has prophesied many things that have come to happen.  Concerning Jesus, some scholars put the number of prophesies about Him in the Old Testament in the hundreds.  There are many other prophesies that have come to be and many more that still will be fulfilled in the future.  I mention this since my own faith has been strengthened by my study of the Bible and the historical evidence that supports the truth of it.

Before I ever studied the Bible for myself, I admit that I had often wondered if it was all really true or if maybe some of it was just myth.  However, unlike mythology, the Bible contains many prophesies that have come true.  Also, unlike mythology, events and people in the Bible can be historically verified.  Importantly, the Bible has transformed a countless number of lives.

I could end this series with more discussion and evidence about the historicity of the Bible, but the truth is it’s up to each person to honestly investigate for themselves.  For those who have read these posts and have not accepted Jesus as their Savior and received His free gift of eternal life, I urge you to do it.  It’s the most important thing you will ever do.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
