Day 18 - 40 Days in the Word: The Blessings of God's Kingdom

Some of the most profound teachings of Jesus appear in the opening words of the Sermon on the Mount. In these statements—often called the Beatitudes—Jesus describes the character of those who belong to the kingdom of heaven. These blessings reveal that God’s values are often very different from the values of the world.

And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.  Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.  Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.  Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.  Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.  Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:1-10 (NKJV)

Jesus’ words in His Sermon on the Mount to His disciples are words for us today as well. In each of our Lord’s statements, he begins with the word “Blessed”.  When we walk in God’s will there are many blessings to be had.  The economy of God’s kingdom is different than the economy of this world.  To be poor in spirit is to recognize your great spiritual need and to depend on God to meet that need.  When we mourn our sinfulness and brokenness, our merciful Savior comforts us.  When we are meek and humble before Him, He rewards us with the inheritance he promised Abraham.  Basically, in all of these “Blessed” statements, we are given instructions on how we can be blessed and receive what the Lord has prepared for us - His children - who follow after Him, worship Him and obey Him.

Prayer:  Father, thank You for the many blessings You have for us.  Thank You for the way You lead us and guide us. Your Word tells us that our citizenship is in heaven.  We are eagerly awaiting the return of our King – Jesus Christ - from there who will transform us.  Father, help us to be in the world but not of the world.  Keep our eyes ever focused on You and your heavenly kingdom.  In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
