When Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey, it was not by accident—it was the fulfillment of prophecy spoken long before His birth. In that moment, He revealed both His identity as King and His heart of humility. The crowds praised Him as the promised Messiah, yet many did not fully understand what kind of King He would be. Even His disciples didn’t grasp the significance until later. This reminds us that God is always at work fulfilling His promises, even when we don’t immediately recognize it. We can trust that just as His Word has proven true time and again, every promise still yet to come—including Christ’s return—will be fulfilled. Our role is to remain watchful, grounded in His Word, and faithful, even when we don’t fully understand His timing or ways.
The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. – John 12:12-16

Throughout the Old Testament, promises of the Messiah were given. Prophesies of Jesus, often called the Messianic Prophesies, were made hundreds, sometimes thousands of years, before Jesus was born. The bible is the only book that has accurately predicted the future. The future is still yet to come, but we know our Lord is going to come back again and will be the eternal King since His Word tells us so. The people of Jesus’ time who knew the scriptures would have known that Zechariah 9:9, quoted in the above passage about the colt, was about the Messiah, and they appeared to believe He was the one at this moment in history. However, things changed substantially as He took His walk to the cross, and even His disciples didn’t seem to understand what was happening. However, after Jesus was glorified, they realized that these things had been written about Him. Let this be an example to us to not miss what might be happening in our time in fulfillment of prophesies and to trust that His future promises to us are true, even if we don’t understand it all now.
Are you trusting God’s promises even in the moments when you don’t fully understand what He is doing?
Prayer: We thank You, Father, that You have given us Your Word to guide us and give us hope. We thank You that You have supernaturally preserved Your Word so that we can look back and see how You have worked throughout history and how You have fulfilled Your promises to us and will continue to do so. We are so thankful for our beloved Savior, who so gently comes in such majesty and authority! Help us learn from Him as we go about our lives in humble service to You. We ask this in Jesus' name, Amen.
