Day 37 - 40 Days in the Word: Humble Love in Action

When Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, He turned expectations upside down. The One they called Teacher and Lord took on the role of the lowest servant, performing a task that others would have avoided. This was not just an act of kindness—it was a powerful demonstration of His heart and a model for how His followers are to live. Jesus didn’t come to be served, but to serve, and ultimately to give His life for us. In the same way, we are called to walk in humility, setting aside pride and choosing to serve others with love. True greatness in God’s kingdom is not found in status, but in a heart willing to serve just as Jesus did.

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.  “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.  Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.  I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.  Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.  Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them - John 13:12-17

The washing of the disciples’ feet was a profound example our Lord gave us.  Dirty (possibly stinky) feet are not the most desirous thing.  In fact, this service was the work of the lowliest of servants in Jesus’ time. However, Jesus, God incarnate, stooped to the feet of His disciples in an act that foreshadowed the ultimate act of humility and love that He displayed on the cross.  Our precious Savior came to earth not to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28).  As His followers, we too are to live a life of service and humility as we follow our Master’s example.

In what practical ways can you follow Jesus’ example of humility and serve others this week?

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord Jesus, that You – the King of kings – and Lord of lords - humbled yourself and came to earth to pay the ransom for us so that we could have eternal life with You.  Who or what other religion can offer us that?  None! We ask that You would help us remember Your example of humility as we walk along on our journeys in life so that we would live in such a way that we would be able to point others to You.  We want our lights to so shine before men that they will see our good deeds and give glory to you! In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
